Strength In Numbers

Issue Ten is nearly upon us. In fact, it’s out at the end of this month. Yikes, seems like only yesterday I was having a testosterone-fuelled altercation with my co-founder that the first issue be a very soft pink; pastel and inoffensive.

In ten issues here at Open Pen the magazine has grown with every release in the amount of people working on it, the amount of copies we press, and most importantly of all, the amount of submissions we get. Feels good to get here, and can’t wait to get on with the next ten issues of literary writing from some of the most talented emerging writers out there.

Issue Ten, in Penguin Orange, is due out Saturday 29th November in all the usual outlets, just about beating the Christmas rush. More information on content very soon. But you can expect another spot on article from N Quentin Woolf, and on this occasion, a quite moving and poignant one too.

Wait! That’s not what I meant, obviously.

Live fiction fans, our last event took place in September and we’ve been raring to get another one in this year. It’s all come together rather nicely, we think, so it would be utterly darling to see you all down there once more. Tickets are priced at £5 or £4 for concessions, and for that price you get:

STORYTELLING

Readings from an Issue Ten author, to be announced shortly before the event.

FILTHY FICTION

It’s not quite stand-up, it’s not quite a reading. It’s something in between and rammed aplomb with appallingly bad fiction of an adult nature. Performed by Sean Preston and Piers Pereira, Filthy Fiction is the reading of the most cringeworthy “adult lit” submissions received at Open Pen and elsewhere. Filthy Fiction is set to take on Edinburgh Fringe in 2014.

WAR OF THE WORDS

Our very own microfiction/flash-fiction competition returns and just got even more special. The winner, selected by our brand spanking new Head of Subissions will receive a place in our deluxe edition of Issue Ten, whilst two runner-ups will find their submissions on our weekly Little Printer publication.

The rules? Your piece must be no longer than 150 words, you must read it out. Straightforward right?

And yes, there’s a bar open with modestly priced booze. Show kicks off shortly after 7, and should finish at about 9:30. However, feel free to stay behind after and have a drink with us.
